Together, the 60 or so islands and cays in the USVI offer something for every type of vacationer. The small outer islets are mostly uninhabited and appeal to day-tripers in search of lazy hours under a palm tree on a secluded beach. Each of the main islands have enough divverences to make them interesting destination on their own. St. John lures nature lovers, St. Thomas draws high-energy shoppers and doers, and St. Croix attracts those who relish a bit more history and architecture with their sun and fun.

St. Thomas and St. John are separated by a two-mile gap of water called Pillsbury Sound. Most of the other volcanic islets and cays that make up the unicorporated US territory are clustered nearby, and the British Virgin Islands begin just a few miles to the east. St. Croix, the largest US Virgin, is isolated 40 miles to the south.
